John Lewis 2019

A brief visit to John Lewis, and as always beautifully presented, however nothing new of personal interest for me. Some of the bigger decorations were the same designs as last year, and their confectionery is always on the pricey side. However they did have some nice looking wire crows - such a shame they are coated with that horrible black glitter.

Dead Of Night - Hugo

I went with a couple of friends yesterday for our, slightly earlier than usual, Halloween meet-up, and we ended up in Deal. Taking the chance to visit the Museum of the Moving Image there, which is a house run by a couple of enthusiastic collectors supplemented by volunteers, I would well recommend a trip to this museum. Chronicling early pre-cinema days of shadow plays and magic lanterns the museum moves forward through the early years of cinema and has a fabulous collection of old posters and ephemera mainly from the Ealing films era. There's not so much on modern films or too many different genres, but this is a small museum and hopefully over the next few years will rotate some of their collection and exhibitions.

Anyway apart from buying a biography of Boris Karloff from their second-hand books shelf, we all had a laugh at the display containing one of the most odd merchandising toys ever sold.

A firm favourite of mine is the 1945 British portmanteau horror film 'Dead of Night,' so imaging our surprise to pull out a drawer and see a Hugo ventriloquist's dummy in front of our eyes! I can't imagine why, if you have seen the film you would have ever wanted to buy your child one of these disturbing toys!

More from Morrisons 2019

Well my first visit to Morrisons yields little results apart from the selling of the white 'ghost' pumpkins, but my second trip was a bit more fruitful. Alas there were no themed beers in their Autumn beer festival display... however...

In the Christmas gifts aisle was a devil's head glass bottle of 'Hotter Than Hell' chilli sauce.

And in the normal Halloween aisle, at least Morrisons have tried something different by selling Halloween party games designed for children's parties. So one can play Jenga with skeleton bones, throw the hoop over witches hats, play a guess who game, knock down Halloween designed cans or throw pumpkin fuzzy balls to be caught by someone with a velcro hat!

Tesco Halloween 2019

The local store in Folkestone has had some interesting fare in recent years but this sadly, like last year, isn't one of those good years. About a third of an aisle is taken up with mainly children's costumes, a few disappointing items of partyware, make-up, and decorations. Sandwiched between the costumes and Christmas items was an even more disappointing selection of sweets.

There were a couple of adult men's tshirts in the clothing department, but not clearly on view. Perhaps better luck next year!

Rye Ghost Walks

I was lucky enough to do one of these on last Halloween night, and whilst in Rye, (East Sussex, UK) yesterday happened upon this poster. Personally I thought it well worth the money.

Halloween Jewellery

In the Creative Quarter in Folkestone at the top of the Old High Street, it is good to see the funky bespoke costume jewellery shop embrace the Halloween season again with some eye-catching designs.

Wilko Halloween 2019

Wilko have their Halloween items out too. Similar to last year but there were a couple of items of merit - cocktail mixers and bottle labels (the latter perhaps not the same qualilty of design that john Lewis did a few years back, but nice to see all the same.)

A Tale of Two Supermarkets

The local Asda and Sainsburys supermarkets put out their Halloween fare this last week... but having got a somewhat sizeable collection of quality decorations I didn't feel tempted and there wasn't anything too exceptional that tempted me to make a purchase.

However, I did notice the difference in quality and presentation this year. I always had favoured Asda in their commitment to having a scary Halloween themed aisle and along with the kids costumes there was always some unusual yet reasonably priced bits and bobs, but I got the feeling this year that they weren't trying as much as in previous years.

Whereas the in-town, small Sainsburys had its aisle visible when you first walk in the store, and although having fairly similar costumes and sweets at least their designs and items had more of a seasonal feel and where more enticing than the sterility of Asda.

Morrisons hadn't put decorations out when I visited, however they did have the white pumpkins in stock again this year. But their 'beer festival' seemed sadly devoid of Halloween themed beers.

TKMaxx Ashford Kent

A passing visit and more of the same, but the shelves have been restocked. Of notable differences was the owl decoration and on a separate table some tableware. Personally, skulls wearing hats don't do it for me, but there will those for whom it does I'm sure!

The Range - Halloween 2019

Again a shop selling a lot of costumes and decorations that don't really cut it with me. The three-headed skeleton dogs have been done to death these past few years. The only thing a bit unusual this year were these halloween metal tealight holders - one to be hung on a metal pole and the other, slightly larger to sit on a flat surface. I wasn't so keen on some of the slightly glittery parts of the witches hat, but like the pumpkin made up of thin strips of metal looks the part.

Trick or Treat from B&M Bargains

Again, another shop has its halloween wares out already, but I didn't feel the need to photograph the usual costume, partyware and decorations from the lower end of the market. However there were a couple of nicely designed items worth a mention. The Frankenstein themed plastic candy bowl for treats is a bit unusual... although the warning to only place wrapped sweets in it may allude to the trick part of 'trick or treat' if there's possibly toxicity issues if unwrapped sweets are used!

Also, at only £2.99 I thought this hanging dead doll decoration better than most seen in recent years.

Hobby Craft 2019

Another store in Ashford is Hobby Craft, which will probably have very similar stuff in every year as there is only so many things you can make, paint or bake! But their halloween selections are out, so if you want to paint a ceramic pumpkin, bake a cake in a rather nice pumpkin cake tray, or fill a glass skull with something, this is the place to go.

Monday 9th September 2019

TK Maxx - different store, same stuff

Well I went to the bigger store in Ashford today but it was more of the same really. Plenty of pumpkin related decorations trying to look vintage but just failing to get the look right... although the light up cat and owl came close! To be fair it is a good year for pumpkin spiced candles in TK Maxx this year though.

Monday 9th September 2019

Poundland 2019

Well, Poundland have started to put their decorations out. However, whereas ten or so years ago, Poundland had a lot of quality yet cheap goods, with their prices staying the same something has to suffer and the goods on sale this year are unremarkable to say the least.

The only notable item on show so far is this rather odd scary clown tealight holder.

Monday 9th September 2019

More from TK Maxx

Again nothing to my liking, but the decorations keep coming in and turning over so someone out there is buying them! Although there is a large selection of pumpkin spice candles this year... and if I didn't already have lots already I might've been tempted.

Carry On Screaming

Well it's not really a Halloween post... but whilst on a walk in the town of Deal yesterday I walked past the house of the late Charles Hawtrey, and since he starred in 'Carry On Screaming' I thought the photos deserved posting.

TKMaxx restocks

One week later and TK Maxx's display is growing. Still nothing extraordinary that I want to buy yet... (I have rather a lot of decorations already, so one has to be a bit choosy these days).

If you are a 'Little Shop Of Horrors' fan there are 'Audrey 2' resin models; and there is an interesting witches broom with hands and hat attached!

The Haunting of Hill House play

Easing in to the Halloween season this week by going, with a couple of friends, to see an amateur production of The Haunting Of Hill House put on at the Herne Bay Little Theatre.

The play was the 1960s adaptation by F.Andrew Leslie and not the more recent Hammer adaptation and the action restricted to 6 scenes across 2 rooms - Eleanor's bedroom and the lounge. So this means that the play misses some of the key action seen in the film version - for example the memorable spiral staircase scene happens off stage. The script for me also seemed to lack the subtleties of Shirley Jackson's writing. And the lack of a sound effect for Eleanor's off stage car crash near the end made Eleanor's final appearance open to interpretation and perhaps not clear for some puzzled members of the audience.

Anyway, on the whole it was a good night out. One has to get used to the fact that in a small amateur theatre group, the ages and personalities of the characters may not necessarily reflect those as written on the page, but the stage design was excellent for a small production as was the sound effects of the paranormal happenings. And Arthur Parker, Mrs Montague's travelling companion, was played so overly camp in contrast to the brashly written character in the original that stands as the antithesis of Mr Montague, somewhat stole the show and it was worth going just to see this comedy performance.

Anyway the night we went the theatre was sold out, so that stands a a testament to the cast and theatre and their supporters.

The first actual Halloween 2019 display in town...

Well I just happened to be in TKMaxx Folkestone when the shop assistant was putting out the first of the boxes of Halloween decorations today in their own display area. (Apart from the Halloween themed mugs as reported last month, which were in the mugs and flasks section.)

To be honest there wasn't anything too appealing yet. The ceramic cat heads (not seen in the photo below) with gaping mouths to put candy in is not my sort of thing, neither were the glass pumpkins or the skull decorations. However the rustic looking pumpkins made from what look like dyed and twisted palm leaf strips were more in keeping with my tastes. Won't be long until more goodies get put out...

The Devil is in the detail...

I went to a friend's wedding last weekend, and I am sad to say I took no pictures of the bride and groom at all; just this medieval carving of the Devil in Saltwood Church, near Hythe, Kent, England.

Lost again!

Sadly failed to find the first Halloween decoration of the year. I thought mid-August would be the first sighting... but July!!! Well done Lynda for sending in two photos from TK Maxx. The Cat mugs though are rather exquisite and at only £3.99 each.
